Who Practices Santeria?

People who practice Santeria are generally known as santeros, though the term “aborisha” may also be used. Santeros practice Santeria by worshiping Olorun (also known as Olodumare), the supreme being and creator of the universe, as well as the Orishas (the saints). In exchange for submission to their deities, santeros are promised supernatural powers and protection from evil – this includes good health, position, influence, and the ability to see and modify the future.

People who practice Santeria believe in reincarnation – that a person’s destiny is already decided before birth – and, through rituals and sacrifices, they can determine which actions to take which will propel them toward enlightenment and toward their destiny. These practices also enable the santero to receive commands from the Orishas that they are required to obey.
